Mountain Driving 101: Match the truck gear and speed to the grade

Mountain driving instructor Andy Roberts and equipment editor Jim Park talk their way through a downhill descent, explaining gear selection, desired road speed. They make two trips down the hill, the first loaded to 80,000 lb (36,300 kg) and the second at 102,500 lb (46,500kg) to demonstrate how selecting the right gear will keep the truck at a safe and manageable speed with no use of the service brakes.
