New air brake learning modules, tests come to Ontario

Ontario introduces its new air brake learning module today (Sept. 1), replacing in-person air brake knowledge tests that truck drivers had to complete when renewing Z endorsements on their driver’s licences.

Those renewing a licence must now complete the online module before going to one of the DriveTest centers that administrate licensing in the province.

“If drivers have not completed the module, they need to return to the DriveTest center after its completion or they can request to do the learning onsite,” deputy registrar of motor vehicles Alfred Sean Doussept says in a memo to carriers.

Onsite learning will be subject to DriveTest space and hours.

The online learning module can be accessed through any device and will take about 30 minutes to complete.

The process involves creating an account that includes recording names exactly as they appear on a licence, uploading a picture of the licence, and a headshot.

Once the learning module is completed, drivers can download or print a Certificate of Completion to be provided at a DriveTest center or Driver Certification Program.

    • WOW!! When we started this Z program back in 85 (mandatoryin 87) at Centennial College, it was a 10 hour program done in one day and drivers really learned about airbrakes back then. All done properly and violations and OOS dropped. Then in the 90s with a change of the guards and that the program was re-written and buddy helped buddy to make some money and drivers did not get the training they had been getting. There was nothing wrong with the one day ten hour course. Then the good old boys gave their buds the job and changed it again. Then a two day 12 hour (not needed and a big inconvenience to public who had no say). Now someone else making money with someone and changed it again. Like Mr. Gill says….anyone can do the test for them. Wasn’t like that when we started it. MUCH better back then and buddy didn’t give it to his bud and make bucks all around. POLITICS..if the public only knew how it all went down but they have a general ideal. How does that go?…welcome to Canada…. or ONTARIO…YOURS TO RECOVER.

  • this is for renewals only not to get your z endorsement, not sure it is going to really add much value however it is a way for drivers who took original z course and need to keep up to date with changes in braking systems to make it easier to write and pass the air brake test on renewal
